IOQ Technical Event

Supporting Industry Knowledge Through IOQ Technical Evenings

Sanland Equipment was proud to host a recent Institute of Quarrying (IOQ) Auckland Branch Technical Evening, reinforcing our ongoing commitment to industry education, safety, and technical excellence across New Zealand’s quarrying and extractives sector.

IOQ Technical Evening and CPD Value

The event brought together quarry managers, operators, and industry professionals for an evening of structured learning, discussion, and knowledge sharing. IOQ technical evenings typically contribute 1 to 2 hours of formal Continuing Professional Development (CPD), supporting professional development while helping attendees stay current with industry best practice.

Practical Technical Focus

The technical session focused on practical, real-world topics that directly impact quarry performance and safety. Recent IOQ evenings, including this one, have covered areas such as machine maintenance and lubrication, fire safety, quarrying policy and regulatory impacts, and emerging technologies, including the growing use of AI in processing equipment operations.

Impactor Technical Session

A key part of the evening was a technical deep dive into horizontal shaft impact (HSI) crushers, commonly referred to as impactors, and their application in quarrying and contract crushing operations. The presentation outlined how impactors use high-speed rotors and blow bars to control product size and shape, often enabling material to be processed to specification with a single machine.

Key technical points included the importance of correct apron settings, feed presentation, and blow bar selection. It was highlighted that even minor changes in apron angle or clearance can significantly affect throughput, wear rates, and product quality. Uneven feed distribution and excessive recirculation were identified as common causes of premature blow bar wear and reduced efficiency. The session reinforced that while impactors offer high flexibility and output, they require active operator management and regular adjustment to maintain optimal performance.

Ongoing Industry Engagement

By hosting events like this, Sanland Equipment supports the IOQ’s role in developing skills, sharing technical knowledge, and strengthening connections across the quarrying community. We value the opportunity to provide a space where professionals can learn from one another, ask practical questions, and leave with insights they can apply immediately on site.

Sanland Equipment looks forward to continuing its involvement with IOQ technical evenings and supporting initiatives that help move the industry forward. Please get in touch if you’re interested in getting involved in future industry events.
